Post by GarzOK - I decided not to make my own arrows for now... I simply don't
have the time or money to sdo so. I do however have enough to buy a
dozen wooden arrows. As a group what is your recomendation as a good
wooden arrow maker? Should I buy a dozen from Cabellas and just tip my
own? Any suggestions for sellers on-line? Any suggestions would be
great.

I'll be 70 just before deer season and have taken many animals, deer
caribou bear. I knew Fred Bear and Earl Hoyt and garnered much wisdom
from both. I have used compound bows, but put them aside for my first
love, the recurve, much lighter and quieter. No mater whether compound
recurve or longbow, the wood arrow with real feathers beats any other
type. You don't need to shoot the arrow right through the animal, in
fact its best that you don't, having it stop inside the animal is best,
as the arrow gets knocked around and the animal tries to remove it, they
are doing a lot of damage while the head remains on the shaft. I use
Howard Hill heads, tests on real game have shown its still the number
one broadhead.
No matter what the shaft material is, the deer will hear it come off the
bow. I think we have heard many stories from hunters saying that they
shot over the deer, they didn't, they apparently don't remember the
basics as Fred used to tell me, shoot low, because the first move a deer
makes is straight down and this is happening as soon as the arrow has
left the bow, so when it gets there, the deer is about 8 to 10 inches
lower. Believe me, many deer have been missed because of this downward
movement that they make.
Like I said, I use wood, feathers, helically fletched and Howard Hill
style broad heads.
All the best to you, good hunting and remember practice, practice, practice.
